The advancement of technology has been developing in weapons, “Many of the most powerful military programs are incorporating artificial intelligence (AI) into their weapons”, effectively making them smart weapons, with these military forces using artificial intelligence it means that they will be soon making key judgments when it comes to their use on their own, possibly even determining who lives and dies. What exactly will these weapons be able to do they will be able to identify the target without haven any human interaction these are known as slaughter-bots, using artificial these weapons are programmed to kill a “specific target” it is then distributed into a location where it’s needed and its Artificial intelligence then through sensor readings including facial recognitions identifies the target that is needed to kill((An introduction to the issue of Lethal Autonomous Weapons - Future of Life Institute, 2021). Military weapons that use artificial intelligence pose a global issue and a threat to human life since they remove human judgment, which is wrong. This technology does not understand the value of human life and should not be able to decide to take a human life, according to UN Secretary-General António Guterres, who agrees that "technology with the ability and flexibility to take a life without human intervention is politically unacceptable, deeply immoral and therefore should be forbidden by international law." Allowing Autonomous Weapon to make this decision would be extremely unstable on both national and global levels “since it brings threats of diffusion, fast escalation, uncertainty, and even the possibility of weapons of mass destruction (An introduction to the issue of Lethal Autonomous Weapons - Future of Life Institute, 2021). The STM Kargu-2 is an Autonomous Weapon that was developed by a Turkish company called STM it’s a “quadcopter drone”, it uses Artificial intelligence allowing it to function independently as well as manually the Kargu-2 is fully capable of fully autonomous targeting, “can form swarms, continues to function even when GPS and radio links are jammed, and is equipped with facial recognition software to target individuals”. This is recognized as a Slaughter-bot which causes concern (Nasu, 2021). A second artificial intelligence was developed by "General Atomics Aeronautical Systems Inc (GA-ASI)" which created the "MQ-9 Reaper" and was awarded a contract by the Joint Artificial Intelligence Centre at the Pentagon for $93.3 million to upgrade it with the latest Artificial Intelligence at the time. The goal was for the Reaper to fly independently without a pilot or human on board and determine where and how to distinguish its target on the ground (Future of Life Institute, 2021). According to Defense News, the military is attempting to reduce purchases of the General Atomics-made drone in the coming financial 2022 budget, which has been "refused by John Roth, the Acting Air Force Secretary." Because he believes the current "MQ-9 fleet is competent of managing present and future tactical and training objectives," John believes the Autonomous MQ-9 Reaper has another 15 years in it. The United States Of America Air Force currently have over 300 MQ-9s and plan on keeping the production line running until at least 2026 (Insinna, 2021). Bibliography.
